The North East School District recognizes the need to develop the unique and special abilities of each student and provides Gifted Education services for students who meet the eligibility requirements.
A gifted evaluation is completed by the school psychologist. The evaluation will consist of a combination of assessments and a review of existing assessment data. After the evaluation, a team will meet to discuss the results and recommendations. If the student is found to meet the criteria for Gifted Education, the team will then develop a Gifted Individualized Education Program (GIEP).
To qualify for gifted services, a student must meet the state’s definition of mentally gifted:
Mentally gifted is defined as outstanding intellectual and creative ability the development of which requires specially designed programs or support services, or both, not ordinarily provided in the regular education program. (22 Pa. Code §16.1) Intellectual ability is not equated with an IQ score alone.
Every student found eligible for Gifted Education has a Gifted Individualized Education Program (GIEP). The GIEP is a strength-based document identifying goals for the year and details any additional activities or services the student may receive. The GIEP team will meet at least once a year to discuss student progress and revise the GIEP. Gifted activities and services vary by building and individual student interest and need.
